This is a great light -- my previous light was a Planet Bike Blaze 2 watt light and though that one was pretty good on city streets, I wanted something brighter for rainy nights so I can see the road (and potholes) more clearly.

This Cygolite is definitely what I was looking for. On most (non-rainy) nights, I use the Low setting since that still allows me to see the road clearly -- the Planet Bike Blaze on its "high" setting is just a bit brighter than the Cygolite on low. But once I switch to medium or high, the Cygolite is *much* brighter than the Blaze.

The beam pattern is good, it illuminates the road well with enough spillover to let me see reflective streetsigns several blocks away.

I haven't run the batteries down yet, I've only used it for about a week (around 4 or 5 hours of use). Since it's rated for 6 hours at medium, I'll probably just recharge it every week and won't have to worry about it ever running out of power.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for urban cycling, December 7, 2011

This review is from: Cygolite Expilion 350-Lumen USB Rechargeable Headlight (Sports)
I purchased this light after struggling to see potholes and other road debris at night with my old light and I couldn't be happier. Running over stuff with a road bike tire (or into a pothole) turns my stomach every time, and this light casts a beam far enough I can easily avoid stuff even when cycling over 20mph. I know, most people get a light so cars can see them, and this does that too, but if you're a road cyclist where the roads are crappy (like here in Southern California) this is a must-have. Easy mounting with multiple hardware options, lightweight, easy to slide off if you're running into the store real quick, and USB CHARGING!!!! Happy cyclist!

It's amazing how far bike lighting has come. Every few months, they get lighter, brighter, and more compact. IMO, this light is the best deal going for ~$100 bones. Battery life seems accurate to specs, and it's pleny bright for urban stuff. And the mounting system is very convenient.

About Planet Bike
In November of 1996, Planet Bike was founded in Madison, Wisconsin. In many ways, Planet Bike began as a social experiment that dedicated itself to doing business in a different way. Instead of being just another company that develops and sells products with profit as its end goal, Planet Bike wanted to help bring about positive change for people, their communities, and the environment.

Despite being a simple machine, the people at Planet Bike have always believed that the bicycle has great potential to help improve the world and the lives of the people in it. From the start, they have embraced an alternative corporate purpose which seeks to help get more people on bicycles by making communities friendlier places for the self-propelled. By donating 25% of company profits to causes that promote and facilitate bicycle usage, Planet Bike hopes to make an impact.

Social experiments aside, Planet Bike was born from the heart of a cyclist with a goal of making innovative, high quality, and practical bicycle accessories. Simply put, they strive to design and develop the best bicycle products in the world. In the company's short ten year history, they have made important product innovations within the bicycle industry. Advancements include the 4-line computer which is now a standard in the industry and the world's first self-contained HID light. Not bad for a company that ten years ago started as a one man operation. Today, while still a small company, Planet Bike continues to evolve and improve their product line with the goal of always striving to build accessories that make it easier for people to ride their bikes. Since 1996, Planet Bike's financial support of the grassroots bicycle movement has totaled $500,000. By 2010, they have made a goal to donate $1 million to organizations that are dedicated to making America a friendlier place for cyclists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great light for very little money., August 21, 2008

This review is from: Planet Bike Blaze 1 Watt Led Headlight (Sports)
I am the type of person who reads the reviews before buying something. I read many reviews on several bike lights. I knew what I wanted to spend and started reading about the lights in my price range. Many of the reviews of this light complained about the way it attaches to the handle bars. I found that this was not a problem. This may be because my Cannondale has thicker handle bars than some of the bikes in the reviews. I am not sure, but it fit easily and securely. The other complaint was about the strength of the light. Most reviews claimed that you would not be able to see very well on a dark trail, but that it was sufficient in a lit city. This is not really the case. I bought two and mounted them easily on my bike. I ride on dark trails at night and have found that even when riding fast I can see really well. This is true even with only one turned on, though I prefer both on at the same time. They don't light the trail like my Honda CRV, but it is plenty bright. Once while... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Good light and Good Mount (ignore contrary reviews), November 5, 2008
This review is from: Planet Bike Blaze 1 Watt Led Headlight (Sports)
I have both the one-watt Blaze and the 5-LED Beamer lights on my bike (note that I am comparing the one-watt Blaze, not the half-watt Blaze). I use the Blaze for constant-on illumination (to see) and the Beamer as a blinker (to be seen).

First of all, there is NOTHING WRONG WITH THE MOUNT (which is the same for both lights). Please ignore other reviews to the contrary, which were posted by people who are apparently unable to read an instruction sheet.

The mounting strap is ADJUSTABLE. It will accommodate very small handlebars, as well as massively oversized handlebars. If you turn the mounting bracket over and examine the underside, you will see that the mounting strap has ratchet-teeth. There is a keep directly beneath the mount which holds the strap to the desired length. If the mount is too loose, push the strap towards the mount to ratchet it to a smaller size. If the mount is too tight, use a small screwdriver to hold the keep up as you let the strap... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Cheapest legitimate "see" light, December 14, 2008
By
bjrubble (Seattle, WA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Planet Bike Blaze 1 Watt Led Headlight (Sports)
Generally lights in this price range are "be seen" lights (for others to see you) rather than "see" lights (to illuminate the road). This light (barely) crosses the threshold to be considered a "see" light -- I can ride at 15mph on a completely dark trail and see enough to feel safe. I couldn't find any other light as bright for twice the price, making this the best deal in a headlamp that I know of.

The light has several shortcomings, but they only add up to one lost star because the brightness is really the only critical issue:
* There's little difference between "high" and "low" modes. I haven't investigated whether this makes a difference in battery life, but the "low" mode seems kind of pointless.
* The "flash" mode is at full brightness. The problem here is that the light is so bright, it creates a disorienting "strobe" effect that actually makes it hard to concentrate on the road. Since you'd only use this mode to be seen, the flash could (and... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Compared to Planet Bike Beamer 3, September 30, 2008

This review is from: Planet Bike Beamer 5 LED Bicycle Light with Quick Cam Bracket Mount (Sports)
First off, I'd like to say I own both Planet Bike Beamer 3 and 5. I bought them both from Amazon when they were both priced at about 16 bucks. I've taken both lights out to compare how they would perform. Both lights are very bright and will force cars, joggers, and anyone to notice you. I would say they are the perfect light for urban use and a minimum for suburban use. They light up the road relatively well from 10-20 feet away from you. They both have flashing and constant on modes. Flashing in both models seem to be brighter than constant on.

I do prefer the Planet Bike Beamer 3 over the 5 though. When comparing the two, the 5 seems to scatter the light a little bit. Let me try to explain; when using both lights shining against a wall, they both project a circle, same size and brightness. But with the 5, the outer edge looks fuzzy. With the 3, the circumference of the circle is very solid and sharp. Also the light color on the 3 is more white colored light,... Read more

This light takes two 'AA's so i can use rechargebles, not pricey watch batteries. The five LEDs have a good throw. When pointed a bit closer to the ground infront of the handle bars it gives off a star cluster rather than a single wash. This is a light not for seeing well but for being seen by others. The easy to install bracket does not seem to tighten enough.I wish designers would make strong metal(titanium?)brackets for lights for those of us who ride everyday, everywhere. Not the best, but better than most.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for lighted area, December 2, 2007
This review is from: Planet Bike Beamer 5 LED Bicycle Light with Quick Cam Bracket Mount (Sports)
The instruction recommends rechargables, but I found that it is considerably dimmer than when using regular alkaline batteries, even when the nimh's were freshly charged. The safety margin is not worth the saving, so I use regular alkaline batteries.

The "flashing" mode bright flashes can be seen over a city block away, but the bright flashes are very disturbing when I am riding in dark areas. The continuous "on" mode does not gives sufficient light to ride safely when there is no other light source like street lights.

This light serves me well in getting drivers' attention from on coming traffic, and is worth the price; going to get additional head light for night riding.
