I've been using the previous version (identical, but a nice silver color instead of black) for several years now, and the new black one for a few weeks. I bike a few thousand miles every year, and I've gone through at least a dozen different lights, so this is based on substantial experience.1) It's never fallen off my bike. This may seem like an unusual claim to make, but most mounting mechanisms will work loose with enough vibration and bumps. I ride a lot. Not falling off is not unheard of, but it is rare. 2) It provides enough light to see by. It's not ultrabright, but it is bright enough. 3) It provides a wide angle of view. Most of the ultrabright lights do it by working like a spotlight. You're only visible from a narrow segment of the road, and you only light up a narrow segment (hello, Blackburn lights costing 2-3x more). This one has very nice optics, where... It does what it's supposed to do, and it does a "good enough" job at it. For $20, it's fairly inexpensive, the beam is bright for such a small torch. I haven't used it long enough to comment on battery life, but with 4 rechargeable AAA batteries, I'm not too worried. The bulb placement and design of the front glass helps greatly by placing a nice large beam on the ground in front of the bicycle, a smaller beam that shoots directly in front of you, and it throws out some lighting to the side so you can sort of see what's beside you. The clamping system works well, it includes an extra rubber band that acts as a filler, as seen in the product picture, for smaller handlebars. I ended up throwing that out as my handle bars are beefy enough for the clamp to clamp on without it. It holds strong, I hit many potholes and dips in the street and it has never moved from its original position. All in all, I give this torch a 4 star rating only... The handlebar mount gave the snuggest fit I've ever had on a headlight. It does not move or twist even when doing heavy riding with jumps and such. The light seems to last an extremely long time which is definitely a plus. It gives more than enough light to see your way and it definitely makes you noticeable especially when using the flashing function. It projects a small amount of light to the sides and on the ground directly in front of the bicycle and about a 3 foot diameter spotlight in front of you. If you are riding in pitch black areas or biking on a mountain in the middle of the night then you might need more light but for most people this will be more than enough to handle the job. |
